MINISINK COMPRESSOR STATION FAQs

How noisy is a compressor station?

The compressor station will comply with all state and local noise ordinances. The vast majority of the time the compressor station's noise levels will be less than 55 dB(A) at the nearest property line. This noise level of 55 dB(A) is approximately that of a normal office environment or conversational speech.

Do compressor stations pose any health threats with respect to air quality issues?

Compressor stations do not pose any health risk to the community with respect to air quality issues. Prior to construction of any compressor station, Millennium works with federal and state agencies to ensure that we meet all the criteria necessary to receive the required air permits needed to begin construction. Granting of the permits is based on our being able to show federal and state officials that the emissions from the facility will not have a negative impact on the ambient air quality standards that are in place. We must also demonstrate that we meet all other criteria related to air pollution emission standards.

Do compressor stations give off odors or emissions that residents will smell?

Residents should not be able to smell natural gas fuel combustion exhaust from the compressor station’s turbines or other equipment. Normally, residents will not smell natural gas from the station because the gas is contained in pressurized piping and equipment. In the event that natural gas is vented to the atmosphere for safety or other reasons, residents may smell the natural gas odorant for a short time.

How safe are compressor stations?

Compressor stations are designed, constructed, operated and maintained in strict accordance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 192; Transportation of Natural Gas and Other Gas by Pipeline: Minimum Federal Safety Standards. As part of our corporate commitment to safety and excellence we go beyond just what is minimally required to ensure that we have the best and the safest facilities possible.
